WORT Jazz Programmer Uncle Larry (Lawrence Hancock) died unexpectedly on Thursday night. He collapsed in the parking lot on his way home from work Thursday, and paramedics were unable to revive him.
Uncle Larry was the host of “Crazyology” from midnight to 6AM Saturday mornings on WORT for about the last two decades, maintainer of the “Madison Jazz Calendar,” and a musician (he played bass in avant-jazz ensemble “The Barbaric Yawps”).
Information about memorial services in Milwaukee and Madison is not available yet.

Blessings to Uncle Larry’s family. He’s irreplaceable and will be greatly missed on WORT.

An institution like Uncle Larry is not replaceable. It is a sad day for jazz lovers in Madison. Our family’s prayers are with his family.
A little bit of our collective soul fades today. What a sad year – the demise of the Concourse venue and Friday nights forever changed.

Uncle Larry put so much into his show on WORT. He must have done so much research to know the music released on the same date as the show. And it ran all night. When I was delivering papers early Sat. mornings I listened to his show.
He was great and very unique. I did not know that he taught math at Marquette University. His memorial service is from 4 to 5 on Thursday in the Chapel of the Holy Family. Here’s the obit:
