Jazz at Five is a Madison institution much like Concerts on the Square. Every Wednesday in August for the last 16 years the top of State Street at the Capitol Square is blocked off so crowds can gather to enjoy jazz. The concerts are free and feature local and international performers you will not want to miss. This year’s performers are listed below, and the schedule is at the Jazz at Five website and listed at Special Events on this site.

What a delight to hear Hanah Jon Taylor last night at Jazz at Five, esp. in his surprise (i.e., previously-unannounced) set with Richie Cole in which both players seemed to delight in the experience. It was the kind of straight-ahead jazz setting in which he is too rarely heard, and in which his mastery and personal approach to the music is perhaps more easily appreciated than when he is playing in amore avant-garde mode. Kudos to Richie Cole for sharing the stage with such an adventurous player.
