MMC seeking proprosals for its Winter jazz series

From MMC President Sue Peterson:

Dear Members and Friends of Madison Music Collective:

Your talents, ideas, and expertise are needed.   Our Fall concert series is all set to go, and now we need your suggestions/ideas for programs for the Winter-Spring Series 2013. We are looking for ideas as follows:

FOR JAZZ ON A SUNDAY – AT THE BRINK*:

1)  We bring in a regional jazz artist of renown with their own group.  Any ideas? For example:

  • Frank Catalano Quintet (Nov. 13, 2011),
  • Jack Grassel’s Super Guitar Trio (Dec. 11, 2012)
  • Lawrence Faculty Jazz Quartet (Sep. 11, 2011)

or 2)  We bring in a regional jazz artist of renown and have them play with our local artists. For example:

  • Randy Sabien String Quartet with locals Chris Wagoner and Mary Gaines (Feb. 26, 2012),
  •  Laurence Hobgood  with locals Sally DeBroux, Laurie Lang, and John Becker (Mar. 25, 2012),
  • Marilyn Crispell with local JoAnne Pow!ers and two players from Chicago, Harrison Bankhead  and Avreeyal Ra (Apr. 15, 2012)
  • Laura Caviani with her tenor saxophonist partner Pete Whitman and locals UW Music Professor John Schaffer on bass and Madison Jazz Orchestra’s Rand Moore on drums, coming to The Brink this Sept. 9

or 3)  Showcase local/regional jazz artists doing something new and different—a new twist  or departure from their usual program. For example:

  • The New Breed performing with spoken word poet, Rob Dz this coming December 2
  • Luke Polipnick & Friends, with a whole new program, this coming Nov. 4

If you are a professional jazz musician and up-to-date on your membership** in the MMC, and would like to participate in “Jazz on a Sunday” in the Winter-Spring of 2013, send us your proposal.  Or if you have an idea of some performer/group we can bring in send us your idea.  PLEASE EMAIL YOUR PROPOSAL/IDEA TO:  mmclisting@gmail.com   We need to receive your proposal or idea by July 15.

PROPOSAL TO PERFORM TO INCLUDE a description of the proposed performance, including:

  • Performers and their instruments, or talents, and briefly, latest honors, gigs
  • Type of music or performance planned
  • Who the performance will appeal to and why

If you have questions, please call:  Sue Peterson, 608-332-5516

*JAZZ ON A SUNDAY is jointly sponsored by Madison Music Collective and “Mad Toast Live” who also hosts the program and replays it via podcast over WORT 98.9 FM at a later date.  The program consists of a concert with 2 sets.  Then, the artists participate in a 1 hour workshop hosted by the Improv Music Workshop, which is free to students-of-jazz of all ages.
