12/8 House Concert with Jazz Vocalist Typhanie Monique

by Howard Landsman

One of Chicago’s leading jazz vocalists, Typhanie Monique, wowed Madison audiences in recent years with performances at the Isthmus Jazz Festival and Jazz at Five.  Now you can catch her, with pianist Ben Lewis, in the rare setting of a house concert on Saturday, December 8th, in the living room of Dave Wallner and Anne Katz at 451 N. Few Street in Madison.  The concert begins at 7:00 PM.

Ms. Monique has performed in many high-profile clubs in Chicago, New York, around the US, and in Europe, garnering rave reviews from jazz critics.  Her style has been called “soul-infused jazz,” with wonderful scat-singing along the way.  For a taste of her musicianship, visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=or_gEzWZ-pM.

Hosts Wallner and Katz have been staging concerts in their home for most of 2012.  I had the pleasure of attending one that featured Sims Delaney-Pothoff and Josh Harty, and all 40 of us in the audience sat no more than 20 feet from the performers.  Not only was the artistry top-flight, but the friendly interaction between audience and musicians made for a delightfully intimate experience.

By catching Ms. Monique on her way home to Chicago from a performance at UW-Green Bay, Wallner and Katz are able to present Ms. Monique at only  $15/person (all of which goes to the musicians).  They also provide liquid refreshments and tasty snacks.

Each Wallner-Katz house concert has sold out and this one is expected to do so too.  Admission is by advance reservation only, and is limited to the first 40 people.  To make a reservation, call Anne or Dave at (608) 256-2958 or send an email to annedave@chorus.net.
