This is relatively old news, but if you haven’t already come across it you’ll find it fascinating. Researchers at John Hopkins put jazz musicians in an MRI machine to see what their brains were doing while improvising. It looks like improvising musicians turn off the self-censoring part of the brain and turn on a part that allows creative expression to flow.
