Thanks for the kind words, Wayne! Working with these incredibly talented and hard-working students was a real pleasure. Their achievements are testament not only to the countless hours of disciplined effort these students have put into their craft, but also to the excellent work happening at these students’ schools on a daily basis.
Regarding the schools whose students were unable to participate this year, that was largely the result of some schedule conflicts that were unavoidable given that the Honors Jazz Band was a late schedule addition. We’ll be announcing rehearsal and concert dates for 2014 in the next couple of weeks and hope that with more advanced planning, the participants in the 2014 UW Honors Jazz Band will be representing even more local and regional schools, including students from the excellent programs at Sun Prairie, La Follette, Edgewood and McFarland!

Carmen Lundy’s “Jazz Ahead” workshop is geared to both instrumentalists and vocalist. In addition to being a world-class jazz vocalist, Carmen is also a highly accomplished multi-instrumentalist (e.g., her CD “Solamente” has her performing on all the instruments), composer, and arranger. She has been a faculty member for “Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead” program at the Kennedy Center for many years, the program that is serving as a model for her Madison workshop, and participants will find her to be a most knowledgeable, engaging, and encouraging clinician.
